Manwë Symbol: Eagle Color (s): Pure white and blue-gray Theme: Air, communication, courage, sky and flight Holy Time of Reverence: June (especially Faradome) Title: Leader of the Valar Association: brother of Morgoth, husband of Varda Though all Valar are equal in strength and importance, Manwë is often considered the leader of the Valar. Some cultures say that such is because he is the most belovéd by Ilùvatar, while others attribute it to the Valar's desire to have One be their Voice. Whatever the reason, it is generally believed that Manwë is the messenger between the Valar and Ilùvatar. As such, he is considered to be the celestial force of communication and called upon for matters that require smooth communication skills (such as, for example, diplomacy or charismatic and inspiring speeches). Manwë is also revered greatly for his virtue and skill, for he was the first to consider taking arms against the corruption of Morgoth. As such, he is considered the patron Vala of Elven Paladins. He is considered their protector and the ideal by which each Paladin should strive to live. And, thus, Elven protectors and paladins proudly wear Manwë's colors: pure white and blue-gray. Such tradition is not only to honor their patronage, but because a mystical quality of strength and virtue is attributed to these colors. In the innermost circles of paladinship, it is whispered that wearing pure white allows Manwë to perceive the Elves in combat and thus bless them with strength and protection. Being the Vala of air (and consequently sky and flight), Manwë's blessing is most frequently felt as a pleasant wind on the face of the fortunate Elf. Of particular interest and importance are Manwë's eagles. To the Elves, they are the messengers of the Valar and are greatly respected and favored. Thus, along with their brethren - hawks - , they are greatly used to carry messages between Elves. It is considered sacrilegious to harm an Eagle in the Elven communities, as it is perceived as direct defiance to Manwë and thus dishonoring the Valar. Lest it be by accident, Elves do not forgive slaying of eagles (and for some part of hawks). They are quite firm about punishing the creatures that dare maliciously slay Manwë's protected birds. Before engaging in battle, Elven generals will often look for royal eagles. For a royal eagle's presence means that more is to be communicated to the Elves (be it in new information, or the possibility of peace talks) and Elves are more likely to wait before striking an enemy. There are also stories of eagles descending from skies to blind the Elven enemies if a battle is going poorly and Elves are in danger. Priests of Manwë are skillful in both speech and in battle. They often lead small groups of Elves to battle against the undead, Morgoth's favorite creations. Manwë's services inevitably include purging of the Sosarian lands and a speech that inspires strength and courage. Priests of Manwë are most frequently found traveling alongside of Paladins and aiding in battle against the wicked.
