Mandos Symbol: Setting Sun Color (s): Black Theme: Spirits, Death and Judgment Holy Time of Reverence: September (especially Yavieba) Title: The Judge Association: Brother to Nienna and Irmö; Husband to Vaïre To those unfamiliar with Elven religion, Mandos may be seem as a grim figure of death and decay. In Elven eyes, however, He is the guardian of the end of Life's cycle. Whereas Edanea fear the principles Mandos teaches, Elves accept His presence and honor the role He plays for Creation. There is a deep-seated and silent understanding of Mandos' role, and thus His teachings are accepted unconditionally, no matter how difficult or trying they may be. However, one of Mandos' most important teachings is that a new life begins where an old one ends, and thus He is often associated with Hope. Mandos is also known for his impeccability in judging fairly. When the slain travel to Valinor, they first come to the Halls of Mandos, marble halls wherein He sits. Mandos sees and knows all they have done in Life, and thus passes judgment upon them. Those deemed worthy are welcomed to the holy lands, and those with still much left to learn are reborn upon Arda. Thus, Mandos' name is invoked when there are trials to be held, especially when it comes to crimes with unclear motives or circumstances. He blesses the judge with clarity of mind and objectivity. However, Mandos is the only one that may truly judge a creature. Though Elves may take a position of a judge, they never do so against Mandos and His guidance, as His wrath would bring them final death. The blessings of Mandos are said to be bittersweet, for as they bring what the Elf desires, they come at a price. Mandos bestows his blessings through sacrifice, taking something important before giving His gift. For such, Elves do not ask for His blessings lightly. In fact, they only ask for His blessings when they are prepared to sacrifice what they hold most dear. As such, it is perceived by non-Elves as a desperate attempt to gain that which is lost. The truth is far from, however, as the Elves acknowledge and accept sacrifice as a part of Mandos' blessing, and ask for it without fear or hesitation. But, out of respect, they ask seldom, for Mandos is respected in His role of ushering spirits into Valinor. Priests of Mandos are few in number and shunned by all except those of their race. They appear dark and brooding, often speaking of death and decay. They are taller and thinner than most Elves, doted with hair of either darkest black or palest white. They wander the lands, not staying long in any one community, for their presence is at times felt with unease. Often performing funeral rites, they are called upon for services that incorporate death. However, they are anything but grim in spirit. They speak with acceptance of death, but with great positivity when it comes to life. Because of a greater understanding of life, they are said to cherish Life more than the average Elf.
