The Effect of Mondain and Changes in the Elves
The Fates, it seems, were not content to let Sosaria go on untainted forever. The
Second Born, or Humans, were born in the many worlds, including Sosaria. The Elves
considered the Humans brash and unpredictable, quick to rage and easily corrupted
by Evil. Many centuries after the Tribes left from Ilcasilme, a human child was born
by the name of Mondain. This child would single-handedly change the course of the
entire world of Sosaria. At the age of fifteen, he killed his own father in order to
steal a powerful, magical ruby gem. Corrupted by its power and lusting for even
more, Mondain turned the ruby’s power upon itself, creating the Gem of Immortality.
With power of the Gem, he took control of the Humans of Sosaria and enslaved its
people. Mondain surely attracted the attention of Morgoth and Lolth during this time,
for his power was great and encompassed all of Sosaria. Morgoth and Lolth poured
their hatred and malice for the Elves, and for the Gods, into Mondain and further
corrupted him and turned him into a being of pure Evil intent.
Mondain began to experiment with many different types of cross breeding. By performing
vile experiments on his own servants, Mondain crossed humans with reptiles and
created lizardmen. Mondain's anger and desire for power, and his cruel lust for
experimenting with the beings of Sosaria, turned towards the Elves of the land,
and he captured many elves and through torture and experimentation, created
the Orcs, under direction and guidance from Morgoth, who had created similar
beings in Middle Earth.
The Forest Elves of Ilcasilme were forced to flee the city due to attacks from Mondain’s
wrath. Unable to contend with his awesome power, the elves, under the leadership of
Nandeserce, fled into the depths of unknown forests far from humans and Mondain’s
abominations. All of the Elven tribes of Sosaria go into deep hiding.
The elves hid away in the less traveled places of the earth for many centuries. One
by one, Mondain discovered their hiding places and destroyed all within. The survivors
of the elven race grew less and less, their fate becoming more and more tenuous. Only
a few groups of hidden elves remained, when a stranger arrived in Sosaria from another
world, the Avatar, and magically stepped out of time to do battle with the wizard.
The powerful Gem of Immortality was shattered and Mondain was slain. Freed from
Mondain's evil, the elves slowly came out of hiding and returned to the open lands of
Sosaria. Many elves of the other tribes were found as well. It was discovered that
after millenia apart, elvenkind had split into many distinct races. Of the most notable
and numerous were the
Anfauglir’Quessir or Desert Elves,
the Alu’Quessir
or Sea Elves
and the
Taur’Quessir
or Wood Elves. Lastly, there were the
Orod’Quessir
or Mountain
Elves who had undergone the most drastic changes of all. In the deep caverns of the
mountains, they were discovered by Lolth who wooed them with words and seduced
them with promises of power. She corrupted them so fully that they were no longer
even to be considered part of elven kind. They were now called the Mori’Quessir or
Drow. The Drow were shunned by the rest of the elves and forced to stay underground
where their betrayal had occurred. The Drow grew a great hatred for the other elves
of Sosaria, and driven on by Lolth's evil, were bent on destroying all other elves of the
realm. Many members of the other tribes were never found or heard from again. Elves
still arrive out of the wilderness to this day, having wandered for many years, lost and
bewildered, descendants from long lost races. Some were even of Silver or Golden
elven descent, their tribes lost for so long, they did not undergo the changes that
other races had.
