The Arrival of the Lost Elves in Sosaria
In the Beginning, Eru, The One, created the world out of the Void. Out of the Void
came into form the Gods, or Valar, to take care of his creations and to dictate the future course of the
universe. Each was given specific tasks to tend to and there was
harmony in the world. However, soon after the Creation, two of these
powerful beings, Morgoth the Enemy and Lolth the Spider Queen, grew
jealous of Eru's power and the power granted to the other Valar and
Gods, and in their rage, turned against Eru and become bent on controlling
and corrupting the world. Morgoth and Lolth openly attack the peaceful
creations of Eru.
As part of the great course of the world, Eru created the First Born,
the Elves. These Elves were born during a period of darkness,
for there was no sun in the sky, only moons. The Valar sought out the Elves
and came to them in their first days,
beckoning them to follow them to the Undying Lands, the home of the
Valar, to protect them from the wrath of Morgoth and Lolth.
Many of the elves chose to heed the call immediately and followed the
Valar to the edge of the Great Sea. They created beautiful ships of fine wood with silk sails
take them to the Isle of the Gods. Many fleets set out to the
Undying Lands, arriving at the home of the Gods one by one in
safety. One such fleet, comprised of fifty fine elven ships, was not so
fortunate. The Enemies, bent on stopping the arrival of the
Elves in Valinor, and thwarted many times previous by the Valar, sent a
powerful servant after the escaping elves in hopes
of destroying them before they reached the Undying Lands. The servant
brutally attacked the fleet with all the anger and malice poured into
him by his Masters, Morgoth and Lolth. Much of the fleet was destroyed along with its
passengers and cargo.
The servant was not entirely successful, however. Two ships survived the
attack, despite the awesome power turned against them. Battered and
broken, they drifted for many months, carried by the currents of the
sea. The Elves called to the Gods to aid them, but no such aid
came. Eventually, however, the ships came to rest in a safe gentle
harbor surrounded by beaches and forest. The elves went ashore and
found a strange new land waiting for them, a land bearing little
resemblance to the land they had left. Shelters were built and camp was
made and the elves looked at their new home with mixed fear and wonderment.
For some weeks, the Elves camped on the shore of the strange land.
They wandered into the forest to hunt and gather food, but other then the
woodland creatures they saw no other signs of life. Soon, however, they began
to feel ill at ease, as if they were being watched. One eve, an Elf named Lienecil was hunting in
the woods. He was watching a doe who was grazing peacefully in a
meadow when he heard laughter. He turned and saw two lovely
elf maidens picking flowers in that same meadow. They were not of his
people for they had brighter features. Their complexion was more
golden and their hair more vibrant in color then was common in his
kind. Lienecil slowly approached them and spoke softly to them.
The spoke in a strange language that
Lienecil did not understand. He frowned a bit and repeated his
greeting in his own tongue. The lasses were alarmed when they realized
he was not just a teasing elf-man but a true foreigner. They froze for
a moment and then dashed off into the forest, leaving no sign of
their presence other then a few plucked flowers laying on the
grass. Later that night, a greeting party came from the elves that were
native to this land, dubbed Golden Elves due to their more golden
appearance. They visited the small camp of the Lost Elves and the
leaders of both groups tried to speak with one another. It took many
weeks of work but at last they started to understand the others tongue
and they debated long into the night. The Golden Elves told the Lost
Elves that they have landed in a place called Sosaria and though it
was not where they had been headed they were welcome to stay.
The Golden Elves, now natives of this new land, were also originally
strangers to this world, having come across the seas to the safe haven
of the Undying Lands. They were blown off course by Lolth, the
Spider Queen. The Elves contemplated their next move for nearly a month.
Finally, the Elders of the Fleet came to a decision. Without dependable ships or
even a knowledge of the way to the Isle of the Valar it was decided it
would be folly to sail away from the safety of this land. Sosaria was now their home.
Both the Golden elves and the Lost Elves (now called Silver Elves)
were very similar. Though they spoke different languages, the main
difference between the two groups was their view of religion. The
Golden Elves worshiped the god Corellon and his Pantheon. The Silver
Elves worshiped Iluvatar and the Valar. It
soon became apparent, however, that these Gods were one and the same,
and that Valar the Silver Elves worshipped were the same Gods that the
Golden Elves worshipped. Lolth had been bent on destroying the
Golden Elves, Morgoth had been bent on destroying the Silver Elves.
