The Ancient Order of Elves: Elven Holidays

Re En' Cormea (Day of Hearts) - Feb. 14th
Re en' Cormea draws inspiration from the love Elves felt when they first laid eyes on Varda, Valier of light and stars. The Day of Hearts honors Hanali Celanil, patroness of love and romance. Through showing deference of those they cherish and those they hold dear to their heart, Elves offer their thanks to Iluvatar for blessing them with his unfaltering love. This special day is spent in company of family and friends, where special memories are shared.

Elves often spend a portion of this day alone, reminiscing about their past loves. This ritual is important as it allows Elves to revive their affection and tenderness so they may offer it to Hanali with grace. During their reverie (process of re-living past memories as if they were happening in the present), Elves may hear answers to their questions pertaining to love and romance. It is said that Hanali Celanil herself descends to Sosaria this day and blesses lovers with courage and luck. To gain her favors, Elves often gather twenty of each gem and offer it as a sacrifice for a year filled with romantic pursuits.

Elves often offer gifts to each other as ways to demonstrate their affection and devotion. These gifts are always sentimental in nature: poetry, flowers, Elven delicacies (such as honey lembas, or heart-shaped maiden cakes) and clothing of red and pink shades. Some Elves chose more expensive gifts (jewelry or precious stones) for the Elves they wish to have companionship with.

Elven couples spend much of the day together, remembering significant moments of their shared life with fondness. Married couples sometimes renew their vows and promises. It is not unheard of for two Elves to perform another wedding ceremony. Elven couples who cannot be together choose to fast on the Day of Hearts, symbolizing how life without love is as life without nourishment.

Young Elves (maidens especially) craft love charms or purchase love potions from the mages and alchemists of the Elven family. As a ritual, maidens are known to tie red and pink ribbons in their hair and wear a garland of apple blossoms. It is said that this ritual brings many suitors to the maiden in the year to come.

Hanali Celanil has not forgotten Elves who have lost love, or who have been hurt by a loved one. Her mysteries on Re En' Cormea allow the Elves to communicate with the loved ones who have departed to Valinor. On this day, Elves are also known to reunite with their families and their companions (especially during times of war, or travel that would scatter the Elves across Sosaria). Hanali's mysteries allow grieving Elves a break from their pain and sadness. For such, all Elves gather to celebrate and honor all that is dear to them as Elven laughter travels through Sosaria.
