The Ancient Order of Elves: Leadership Ranks

  Elders: Yaara'Edhel (Rank VII)

Elders are admitted according to the Admittance Requirements, as outlined in the link below:

Eldership Admittance Requirements

Being an Elder in ELF is a commitment to serving the guild on the highest level. It is about self-sacrifice, about commitment, about perserverence and it is about dedication. Eldership is high stress, high work volume but also a highly rewarding position in the guild.

The Ancient Order of Elves is one of the largest guilds in Ultima Online, and one of the most structured and organized. There is a reason it has survived for so long and has stayed in the top 10 on Pacific for almost 4 years straight: the quality of its leadership.

To be a member of such an important team is an honor in itself - to serve the guild from this position is to influence its direction with your ideas and thoughts and to shape its present and future. The ELF of tomorrow is determined by the leadership of today. Every leadership decision you make shapes the future of the guild, for better or for worse.

An Elder is always in the public eye, whether it's before a crowd of elves out front of Eldamar, a public message in the forums, or it can also be in a private discussion with only one elf. Your words are scruntized and discussed by other elves, your actions are seen by all, your attitude, your maturity, your leadership, everything is under scrutiny. You must strive to be the best you can be every single hour of every single day. For every mistake you make, you need to have ten successes to even the score.

Your first and foremost dedication is towards the membership of ELF. While you may enjoy a high rank as a leader in the guild, you are their servant for all intensive purposes. You serve them. You are in a leadership position in order to enhance their gaming experience in UO and their guild experience in ELF. You are here to enrich their lives, to be their support structure, to encourage them, to motivate them, to entertain them and to console them when times are tough.

Eldership Duties:

Calendar Maintenance: As required, add/delete events from the calendar and ensure that any upcoming events are included on the IRC topic header.

Forum Maintenance: Use of moderator functions to ensure that posts are in the appropriate locations (a post selling 50 green thorns in the RP forum should be moved to the trade forum), removing posts which are distasteful/vulgar, or grossly inappropriate for the forums (NOTE: Any post which is removed must have a copy moved to the Elder forum, unless of course the message is grossly vulgar and does not have any impact in terms of current members). Consult an Arch Elder or GM if you are unsure.

Attend Events: Ensure that you attend as many events as possible. Show support for your guild mates and support their events.

Ensure others attend events: When events are upcoming, reinforce the advertising the event host presents by putting in your own announcement of the upcoming event, use bright colors and make sure every single ELF member in the IRC channel knows about the event.  All elves must attend events, make them come!  Send private messages in IRC to ELF members who are online but are not gathering for the event, they should be attending to support their guild mates.

In Game: Ensure that you are in game and visible frequently. This is an IMPORTANT role of an Elder! By being in game frequently and visible to the guild, you will build confidence in your leadership, earn the respect of the guild as a leader and your authority will grow. Absent leaders hold no power.

Leadership Responsibilities:

Guide the guild through example. Be seen as working twice as hard as any other member in the guild. Be upbeat, be positive, especially during negative times. RolePlay your heart out. Others will model themselves after you and be sure you're always on your best behavior. If you need to vent, never, EVER do it in front of others. Save venting for an Arch Elder or GM, that's what they are there for.

Eldership does not equal instant respect and authority! You need to earn this over time by proving yourself as a capable, trustworthly, dependable and mature leader. Respect and authority will grow over time. Be sure that you always nurture this relationship with your guildmates. ALWAYS remember that you are no better than them. Your rank is not a position of superiority, it is a position of service.

Resolve conflicts between elves as quickly and smoothly as possible. Consult Elder Conflict Resolution documentation for details.

Show public support for the decisions of other Elders as well as decisions from the Throne. If you do not agree with it, save debates for the Elder forum and private IRC messages with leadership members. Do NOT discuss discontent with other members in the guild, even friends. Too often this is taken out of context to mean real dissention in the ranks and causes widespread damage. Do not involve others in affairs which should be solely left to the leadership.

Uphold all of the laws of ELF in a fair and just manner. Use common sense and interpretation. Most rules in ELF are not concrete and are left intentionally vague. Use your best judgement and consult with other leaders if unsure how to proceed with an issue. Be fair, be moderate, be understanding and yet firm. These are our friends who we need to exercise leadership judgement on, and most decisions are made in front of the public eye. Be seen to be using authority fairly and consistently.

*If IRC Ops are granted:
Supervision of IRC chat room by use of Operator functions. Consult IRC moderation guide for details.

*If Emissary access is granted:
Interview new elf applicants as requested by Sintars. Make a strong effort to put aside personal pursuits in-game to ensure that new elf applicants are dealt with as swiftly as possible, our Sintars work very hard to prepare elves for interview and appreciate Elders who are able to perform interviews when asked. Consult the Sintar/Iluvatar interview guide for details.

Arch Elders are drawn from the pool of Elders in the guild. An Arch Elder is expected to have been an active Elder in ELF for at least a 4-6 month period. Arch Elders are selected by the Guild Masters of ELF, with the assistance and input of the current Arch Elder team.
