As told by Gunther, King of the Elves (GM of ELF) Mar 1999-Jan 2001
August 98: The Birth of ELF
Mystic One was the first King of the Elves. He was an awesome fighter, and
an inspirational leader. His second in command was Zazar, the Prince of
the Elves and Eros Rex was third, the Grand Lord of Elf. The early days
were humble, elf barely numbered 20 when I joined. Roland the high elf
recruited me in September 1998.
ELF grew quickly, and before long we passed 50 members which put us on the top
ten of Pacific. We weren't the same guild back then, role-play was an option not
a requirement. There was little organization and few standards.
Eros Rex was the voice of elf, we rarely saw Mystic One, but Eros was always
there. He cared more for ELF than any other at that time, and he was my
teacher. He taught me the basics of UO and of ELF.
Other names of the time worth note were the Elven Lords Dream Rider, Roland,
Paul Knight, Nice Guy, Silver Rain and The Shadow. They were the great
leaders of the early days. They were the guys who you ICQ'ed when you were
in trouble.
Jan 99: The Decline of Eros Rex
Eros Rex was the voice of ELF. He made sure the new guys got trained and
made sure the old ones had fun. But he was not without fault; he was very
strict, almost bossy. Some elves did not like this and they began a smear
campaign against him, lead by 'The Shadow', Eros was kicked out of elf. I
was a Lord in elf but went with him and together he and I founded ELS which
became EKR.
During the genesis of ELS, ELF became huge, nearly 80 members. It was the
third largest guild on Pacific. But I was not impressed because the
quality of membership was not the highest, in fact anyone at all could get in.
Eros and I did not share power well, and I left ELS and returned to ELF.
This was near the time EverQuest was released to the public.
March 99: The Decline of ElF
Ever Quest was released and most of the leadership of ELF left Ultima Online to
play EQ, including Mystic One. ELF was devastated. Mystic One gave the
guild to Luthar who was perhaps the best PvPer to ever be in our ranks.
Luthar was however not a statesman, he was a warrior and a hero. ELF went
from the 3rd largest guild to nothing. There was scarcely 4 or 5 members
that were at all active. These were the dark times of ELF.
Luthar, after a month decided he did not want to lead ELF, and he sought a
replacement and found one in me (Gunther).
April 99: The Rebuilding
ELF was a shell of what it was, and I was left in charge. Huge changes
would need be made. First change was to make the guild event based.
We had events often, including the first tournament (wow, we have had over 20
now!), and monthly dungeon raids in which the entire guild got together and
COMPLETELY cleaned a dungeon. Hythloth was our favorite, since it was the most
difficult back then.
We also went into the first ELF guild wars. ELF was a huge player in WoW
(war of the World), a shard-wide event. This involved guilds such as KGB
and FL and the Soul Blighters. We fought hard and won often, but not
without losses of our own. We came out a better guild, a stronger guild,
and more aware of how sacred peace is. Some DEA members joined ELF for the
short term to take part in WoW. Merlin and Ilsngrath were Arch Elders at
that time (Merlin is now known more commonly as Seth).
Summer of 99: Orc Wars!
WoW however did not last forever, as exciting as it was. ELF was growing
again and it looked for new challenges. It was at this time that a strange
guild appeared. A guild of newbies who played Orcs. The Orcs of Kor!
I contacted Kor and we quickly set up a role-played relationship between our two
guilds. We had many large-scaled battles, some wins and some losses.
One word of advice: NEVER rush the orc fort when it is well defended!
During this time, ELF again became a top ten guild, however this time
role-playing was a requirement and it was far more demanding to be a member.
Soon the PLO (Priestess of Lolth Organization) joined in the battles. They
were a great challenge to us but we always overcame them. The light was
behind us.
Fall of 99:
Gunther (me) had a duty with the army reserves and was on 24 hr alert due to the
Bosnia conflict. I decided to hand the guild over to Falco Sunblaze,
second in command. Falco however did not lead long, only a few weeks. He
handed the guild to Talon, the drow.
In this time, Prince Cerebus and Gavin of Greenly were made Lords of ELF
(elders). As was Beaste who is exiled.
Talon was a great elf, one with great vision, but his vision did not honor the
elves that built this great guild. ELF fell out of the top ten, in fact
many members lost interest. It was at this time Gunther returned to ELF.
Talon and Gunther worked well together at first, but there came a power
struggle. Gunther was always around, but Talon was never there.
After time, Talon and Gunther came to a fight and Gunther left and formed EO
(the Elven Order). All the people on ELF and many of the people that left
before joined EO. Daz was a strong backer of EO, as was Merlin (who is
Seth) and Roman. They were the founders of EO (which later returns to ELF
as we know it today).
Tarvus joined at this time, Sarlock Longbow soon after. Sulvisdica
recruited Sarlock.
Winter of 99: Rebuilding Elf
Aiglos joined elf at this time. In fact many elves joined, as ELF once
again reached the top ten (But we were called EO at that time). We all
worked hard and made the guild great again, in fact we joined the top ten of
Pacific again. We had many wars and many events. elves such as Bill Nye
and Aiglos worked to bring role play into our guild as I worked to bring events.
We warred OfD and Ty'Orthor at this time, and the PLO.
In this winter we added Jacob, Barak and soon Meph. Believe it or not Meph
did not get along well in his old guild, they did not appreciate him!
Well, ELF sure did!
Spring of 2000:
This spring was the time Trammel came out. ELF had saved up one million
guild to buy a castle deed. If you think 1 mil is a lot now, it was a
crazy amount back then, like 20 mil now. We did not place a castle then
but we really tried! Sarlock gave 100K gold to me back then, that's what
caught my eye. To give that much you have to care about the guild (Would
be like 500K now).
In the spring, Hawk Silverleaf managed to get the ELF name as the original stone
decayed. We changed the name back to ELF and kept EO as our war stone (We
made it Order for a time).
Later in that spring, Sarlock became an Elder. Meph and Gavin joined him
as Elders. Devon soon after.
Summer - Fall of 2000:
ELF had some tough times but it held strong. We grew to be the largest
role-playing guild on the shard and we had events every week or two. The
tournaments at that time had 40 - 50 players involved and the prizes measured
from 200K to 500K. Sarlock was promoted to Arch Elder that fall.
Gunther was the primary inventor of ELF Ball at this time, with assistance from Sarlock
in co-ordinating it. This would soon become one of the most exciting events in the guild,
and still to this day draws a large crowd of elves to participate.
Winter of 2000 - Spring of 2001:
ELS, a guild Gunther and Eros Rex formed long ago became EKR in the past summer
- fall of 2000. Gunther, however, felt all elves owed allegiance to him (This
was role-played of course) and vowed to make war on all who did not agree.
AOT (Avengers of the Throne) was formed to advance this effort. AOT was
the most fierce fighting force the elves had ever known, and no one stood in
their path. First the orcs, then the humans of the City of the dammed,
then the elves in EKR learned of the might of AOT. The battles were the
greatest ever known to humans and elves alike. The elves of AOT fought the
elves of EKR, and ELF fought along side of AOT, loyal to the crown of Gunther.
This time was called the Kinslayer Wars. EKR was left in ruin after the
war.
King Gunther however was not happy to win the crown through war and left.
It was at this time he gave the elven crown to Sarlock Longbow who was Sovereign
of ELF at the time.

ELF History as continued by Sarlock Longbow,King of the Elves (GM of ELF) Jan 2001 to Present:
Jan 2001 - May 2001: The Downfall of AOT and the Rise and Fall of the Mercaerin
Sarlock was crowned King of ELF in Jan 2001, and was beset by many challenges brought
about by the formation of AOT. EKR immediately rose to challenge AOT and
ELF was called upon to send its greatest warriors and mages to AOT to assist in
the war. Great tensions arose between ELF and EKR and also DEA, which did
not favor the war or its implications. Many members of ELF left due to
their strong dislike of killing other elves and those whole affair created a
rift through the guild.
With the dissolving of AOT, many elves from both sides scattered to the winds,
many came home to ELF after the chaos had ended.
It was at this time also that the Order of Mercaerin came to power. Led by
the Seers (Jyrra, Masara, Geryn and a few others) they created a role playing
event unmatched in its scope. The first invasion took place in Felucca and
took place mostly near the town of Skara Brae. EKR took the helm of this
attack, with assistance from DEA and ELF/EO. Many elves died serving the
good of Britannia in this war.
However, the fact that it was in Felucca drew a considerable amount of grief
players, looters especially, and this drew a negative shroud over the whole
event. It wasn't your normal Feluccan battle with looting, this was a role
playing event where you were sure to die within 30 seconds of entering the war
(the Order were strong enough to kill you in 1-2 shots - you seldom survived an
attack from one of their members). Most found that they could not fund
their efforts against the Order when they were dying and being looting 10+ times
per night.
The relationship between the Skara Brae community and the Elven Federation (EKR,
DEA and ELF) was sundered by this scenario, much name calling and flames on the
Chimera resulted and the Federation and Skara Brae severed ties and members of
the Federation were banned from Skara Brae (Felucca - role played)
The Order faded for some time, as the Seers reworked how they would execute
their scenario. The event moved from less direct confrontation to more of
a clever role playing scenario. The Seer-played Order wove a deep history
around themselves, which told what their intentions were in the present.
It was around this time that the Athric Circle re-instated to power, under the new
leadership of the drow Darklock. Darklock had been a menace of ELF for ages, ever
since the days of The Shadow Legion and the fateful battle between TSL and ELF
in the Yew Crypts where ELF were crushed by the might and organization of TSL.
With the second rise of the Athric Circle, several members of ELF were drawn to the
dark side (role played) and EO (our war stone) rose in numbers to fight the
strength of AC. However, our assault soon turned futile as the strength of
numbers of AC grew much beyond that of EO. It was at this time that the
Order of Mercaerin returned to the realms (after a short period of peace) and
from the Athric Circle they gained the means to travel to Trammel in their quest
to seek out the elves and destroy them.
The Order came to Trammel at this point and began to spawn great numbers of
undead at key elven locations, at our Tavern, in Eldamar (Meph's large marble -
now owned by Anoron and Azryk), as well as key EKR locations. Our efforts
were now focused on defending our homes from the onslaught of the Order.
The Seers made an unprecedented move and began to speak directly to the
leaders of the guilds and worked with Sarlock, August and others in developing
plot lines and co-ordinating attacks so as to heighten our role playing
experience. This was truly going to be an exciting event.
It was at this point, as some may recall, that without warning OSI pulled the plug
on the Seer program. The entire Order of Mercaerdin scenario dissolved in
an instant as the Seers were given their bags and kicked out of the doors in one
fell swoop. What was to be a great event dwindled before our eyes and we
were suddenly without our friends, the Seers, as well as our role playing event.
ELF had 110 members at this point, ranking as high as 7th on the top ten list.
June-August 2001: What is Role Playing?
Great debate was had around this time as to the "true" definition of
role playing and how ELF should interpret this. There was much criticism
from within ELF as to the role playing quality of some of its newer members, as
well as criticism from outside sources, primarily from the orc guilds.
Many changes came out of this discussion: The adoption of Quenya as our
language, the transition of our ranks from Common to Quenya as well as an
attempt to limit our skills, weapons and armor choices to what we felt as "elven".
Some of these changes came with great success, others met with great
resistance. EO, our war guild, was determined to be the flagship of elven
roleplaying, and faced many more restrictions and requirements.
One of the primary consequences of this move was the departure of several elves
who did not agree with taking the role playing philosophy to such an extent.
ELF had about 80 members at this point, placing it around 10th on the top ten
list.
Activities during this time consisted of many role playing events, parties,
tavern meetings, story telling sessions, etc, as we experimented with role
playing in its more extreme sense. EO fought ORK, PLO and a few other
guilds, with more focus on role playing and less on PvP.
Towards the end of the summer, this philosophy began to experience some of its
flaws: The EO guild could not maintain a high enough excitement in role played
wars, and ELF found itself become more and more exclusive in choosing its
membership, thus limiting severely the number of new elves who joined the guild.
However, out of this time period came many changes, many of which are with us
today and still enrich our guild.
September-October 2001: The Sundering and Rebirth
The King Sarlock was seperated from the guild for over a month at this point
(due to problems getting an internet connection set up after he moved) and the
loss of the guild's leader proved a mighty challenge for the guild. Many
elves left at this point, some in violent outbursts, some due to frustration due
to personality conflicts, others due to boredom.
It was with the return of Sarlock in October that the guild was forced to
restructure somewhat in order to return itself to its former glory. It was
also at this time that Sarlock and Gunther had a division of ways and Gunther
departed (while he did not actively play UO at this stage, he was always there
for spiritual guidance)
As this point, ELF had 50 members. Elders: Kiara Brightmoon, Barak,
Thalestin, GwendlynFiremane, Mephistopheles
ELF needed to reform itself to better serve the requirements of the elves of the
present. The old days of Felucca were long gone, even in the minds of the
older elves, and the realm of Trammel was fully upon us. The game of UO
was much more solo-play based than before, and finding new ways of getting elves
to gather together in groups was a challenge. Elf Ball, as always,
remained a constant, and hunts were made frequent and as exciting as possible.
New games also challenged the current membership, Anarchy Online and later
Dark Ages of Camelot, which drew many members away from the guild and into the
new realms.
A better balance between players who were focused more on PvP and those who were
more focused on role playing was made, and served both parties better.
November-December 2001:
This was a time of rebuilding: New Elders were promoted at this time to assist
in growing the guild back into its former glory: Moslar, Siphon, Rastlin and
Anoron Quessir.
ELF Ball was turned into an every two weeks event, the Grand Elven Tournament
was postponed for two months, and events focused primarily on building the
excitement level of the guild with lots of fun activities. Membership
began to grow slowly at first, then more quickly as word of the "New
ELF" grew through the community. A guild that was scarcely 50 members
grow to over 90 (veterans) by the end of December.
Several great parties were had, ELF Ball continued to be a strong success, and hunts
were frequent and enjoyable. At the end of December, the guild saw the
return of many former UO players, returning to the game as well as to the glory
of ELF. Shinobi returned, Gunther returned as Spiritual Leader of the
Elves, Ilsngrath returned. EO was declared an Order stone and entered into
the fights against Chaos.

January-April 2002: The Glorious Ascent
ELF was more active than ever, events were frequent and fun, and elves were seen in
every corner of the globe, adventuring, travelling, role playing and
fighting. ELF reached a pinnacle of over 150 members, placing us second on
the guild listing, behind only the Guardians of Light.
ElF had also become involved in a roleplay war against the Holy Order of the Silver
Wolves which was one of the most successful and longest roleplay wars to date.
ELF instated its class system, dividing the guild more clearly into set classes and
divisions and put a leader at the head of each section, in order to promote role
playing and excellence in each area. There were definite challenges, some
leaders had difficulty adapting and some elves were confused as to which class
they belonged to and what was required of them.
Eldador, the land of the elves, also had begun to take form as many elves aquired
houses around Eldamar
May-July 2002: The Slow Descent
No high can exist forever, and ELF slowly peaked and begin to slowly descend.
The class system was seen by many as too confusing and found the guild too
divided in many areas. Efforts were made to bring the classes closer
together again and find suitable leaders for each area.
It was at this time that Dark Ages of Camelot began to catch on, and many elves
ventured to play this game. Most returned, but some remained. As
with all new games, the guild always feels an impact. By early summer of
2002, another game was released, Neverwinter Nights, which had less of an impact
on the guild as a whole, but still stole people's time from UO and the guild and
invested it in other pursuits.
July-October 2002: The Elven Order
Sarlock Longbow decided, after 2 years of leading the guild, to reduce his duties as
King and invest his efforts towards a more military pursuit. Queen
Gwendlyn Firemane was appointed leader of the Ancient Order of Elves while King
Sarlock Longbow and Elder Tindr Thornleif, rebuilt the war stone The Elven Order,
into an Order war stone and led many great elves to battle on a nightly basis. Gwendlyn Firemane
invested her time and energy towards role-playing in the guild, and appointed
Nikol as an Elder to assist her. ELF floated around the 110-120 member
mark for most of the summer.
While Sarlock spread his wings as a military leader, Gwendlyn prepared for the
hardship the guild always suffers around this time of year. More elves
depart than stay this time of year, mainly due to real life obligations such as
starting school, new jobs, or boredom as the excitement of summer passes.
Due to the lack of activity of elves in general, promoting events and motivation
became difficult, but not impossible. A few elders as well had been called
away to real life duties. Gwendlyn saw a need to gather resources and
strength if ElF was to weather the drought.
During this time four elves were promoted to Elder: Nikol, Skyleah, Khorendil,
and Winterfall, and Glade was promoted to the position of Arch Elder.
Queen Gwendlyn made changes to certain parts of the rules to be more focused
upon roleplaying and smoothing out the ranking system to cause less
confusion. This was also a time when Eldador, the Land of Stars, was being
conceived and brought to a humble beginning though small purchases of homes near
Eldamar. Sarlock Longbow returned from the Order/Chaos wars with EO in
late October and resumed full duties in ELF.
November-December 2002: The Great Rise to Glory
Membership swelled, guild activity blossomed. All facets of ELF exploded in a flurry
of activity, excitement and fun. Our IRC channel, the forums, the guild,
events in game, role playing, everything blossomed. The addition of some
great new elves injected youthful exuberance and excitement into the
guild. Future leaders vied for political worth, great event planners set
in motion complex and enjoyable events. Guild membership rose from 105
members to 165 members in just two months. Retention of new elves was
increased significantly with the furthering of the Sintar program, due mostly in
part to Anoron and Warui's hard work.
The class systems came into maturity. Changes were made to some classes: The
Warriors became the Paladins of Manwe, Tamers gained a new class, Manu
Tel'Talant and the Mages received a facelift and revitalization.
